Utrecht, 4 juli 2025 – Biotech Booster, het nationale valorisatieprogramma dat baanbrekende biotechnologische innovaties versnelt van kennis naar impact, krijgt de tweede tranche van de subsidie uit het Nationaal Groeifonds toegekend. Dat heeft het kabinet op 3 juli besloten. Met deze toekenning is de voorheen voorwaardelijke financiering definitief en is de continuïteit van het programma gegarandeerd tot 2032.

Dit is niet alleen een erkenning voor het harde werk van alle betrokkenen en partners uit de Nederlandse biotech sector, maar ook een belangrijk signaal dat de overheid de strategische waarde van biotechnologie voor Nederland onderschrijft. Deze impuls stelt ons in staat om de internationale positie van onze sector te versterken, samen met onze partners zoals Oncode Accelerator, RegMed XB, NXTGEN Hightech, Hollandbio, DSM Firmenich en J&J. Investeringen zoals deze zijn essentieel om innovaties sneller naar de maatschappij te brengen, nieuwe bedrijvigheid te creëren en oplossingen te ontwikkelen voor grote uitdagingen op het gebied van gezondheid, voedselvoorziening en duurzaamheid. We kijken ernaar uit om het programma de komende jaren verder te ontwikkelen en nog vele onderzoekers en ondernemers te ondersteunen bij het vermarkten van hun innovaties.”
De tweede tranche is onderdeel van de totale subsidie van 246 miljoen euro die in 2022 door het Nationaal Groeifonds werd gereserveerd. De toekenning volgt op een positieve evaluatie van de eerste fase waarin Biotech Booster succesvol heeft laten zien hoe het programma biotech onderzoekers en ondernemers helpt om biotechnologische innovaties sneller naar de markt te brengen door middel van financiële middelen, mentorschap en netwerk. Van ontwikkeling van nieuwe medicijnen, tot waterzuivering door champignonschimmels tot duurzamere landbouw door biologisch afbreekbare zaadcoatings: het programma ondersteunt een breed scala aan veelbelovende biotech innovaties in hun ontwikkeling naar de markt.
Commercialisering van biotechnologische innovaties
Het plan voor het Biotech Booster programma werd in 2021 ingediend door een coalitie van koepels van Nederlandse kennisinstellingen, Hollandbio, DSM Firmenich en J&J, en ontstond vanuit de behoefte om de valorisatie van biotechnologische kennis in Nederland structureel te verbeteren. Nederland loopt in internationaal verband namelijk voorop in publicaties en patenten op het vlak van biotechnologie, alleen blijft de vertaling en valorisatie daarvan in bedrijvigheid en toepassingen die de markt bereiken, verhoudingsgewijs achter.
Minister Bruins, Ministerie van Onderwijs, Cultuur en Wetenschap: “Betere zorg, een gezondere leefomgeving of slimme innovaties voor een beter klimaat. We hebben eerder gezien dat Biotech Booster echt werkt. Biotechnologische uitvindingen kunnen het dagelijks leven echt verbeteren. Bovendien versterkt dit soort onderzoek onze wetenschap en economie. Het mes snijdt aan twee kanten. Ik vind het daarom echt goed dat we volle bak door kunnen met dit geld uit het Groeifonds.”
Toekomstperspectief
Met de nu definitieve financiering kan Biotech Booster haar activiteiten verder intensiveren. Het programma ondersteunt biotech onderzoekers en ondernemers bij vormen van een bedrijfsplan en het overbruggen van de zogenoemde ‘valley of death’, het traject van kansrijke ontdekking naar toepassing. Dat gebeurt via mentorschap, financiële middelen en een landelijk ecosysteem waarin kennisinstellingen, bedrijven en industriepartners samenwerken. Industrie en academie worden in een vroeg stadium bij elkaar gebracht om te zorgen dat wetenschappelijke kennis zo snel mogelijk wordt vertaald naar maatschappelijke toepassing. Tot nu toe zijn in totaal 71 projecten tot het programma toegelaten, waarvan 54 in de eerste ronde in 2024, en 17 in de tweede ronde dit jaar. Momenteel bereidt Biotech Booster de nieuwe ronde van 2026 voor, waarin een nieuwe lichting van ondernemende onderzoekers kan toetreden tot het programma.

Biotech Booster is een nationaal programma gefinancierd door het Nederlandse Nationaal Groeifonds dat de commercialisering van biotechnologische bevindingen in Nederland ondersteunt. Biotech Booster biedt financiële steun, mentorschap en netwerkmogelijkheden om wetenschappers en ondernemers te begeleiden van de idee-fase naar een investeerbaar of commercieel voorstel. Het doel is ervoor te zorgen dat de voordelen van biotechnologie meer en sneller impact hebben op de samenleving. Dutch Biotech Valorisation Receives Major Boost: National Growth Fund Invests €196.4 Million in Biotech Booster
Utrecht, 4 July 2025 – Biotech Booster, the national valorisation program that accelerates groundbreaking biotechnological innovations from knowledge to impact, has been awarded the second tranche of funding from the Dutch National Growth Fund. The Dutch cabinet made the decision on 3 July. With this approval, the previously conditional funding is now definitive, securing the continuity of the program through to 2032.

The second tranche is part of the total €246 million subsidy that was reserved by the National Growth Fund in 2022. The award follows a positive evaluation of the first phase, during which Biotech Booster successfully demonstrated how the program supports biotech researchers and entrepreneurs in bringing biotechnological innovations to market more quickly through funding, mentorship, and network access. From the development of new medicines to water purification using fungal mycelium and more sustainable agriculture through biodegradable seed coatings, the program supports a wide range of promising biotech innovations on their path to market readiness.
Commercialisation of biotechnology findings
The Biotech Booster program was proposed in 2021 by a coalition of Dutch knowledge institution umbrella organisations, Hollandbio, DSM Firmenich, and J&J, responding to the need to structurally improve the valorisation of biotech knowledge in the Netherlands. Although the Netherlands leads internationally in biotechnology publications and patents, the translation and commercialisation of this knowledge into businesses and market-ready applications lags behind.

Looking ahead
With this definitive funding secured, Biotech Booster can further intensify its activities. The program supports biotech researchers and entrepreneurs in developing business plans and bridging the so-called ‘valley of death’: the gap between promising discoveries and real-world applications. This is achieved through mentorship, funding, and a national ecosystem in which knowledge institutions, companies, and industry partners collaborate. Industry and academia are brought together early in the process to ensure that scientific knowledge is translated into societal applications as quickly as possible. To date, 71 projects have been admitted to the program: 54 in the first round in 2024, and 17 in the second round this year. Biotech Booster is currently preparing for the 2026 round, where a new cohort of entrepreneurial researchers will be welcomed into the program.
