Impact Developers are a vital part of Biotech Booster’s expertise team. As pioneers in this new role, they work to raise awareness of valorization (translating research into societal or economic impact) at universities of applied sciences. They also guide promising biotech projects and regularly meet at different institutions to share insights and strengthen collaboration.
On June 5th, 2025, Biotech Booster’s Impact Developers and members of the Central Office gathered in Leeuwarden at Van Hall Larenstein University of Applied Sciences. The meeting opened with remarks from Koos Oosterhaven and Ab Kragtwijk, who introduced the Four Green Universities of Applied Sciences: Van Hall Larenstein, HAS, Aeres, and Inholland.
The program continued with a presentation by Martina Sura-de Jong, Project Leader of the Soil Probiotics project and Professor of Applied Science leading the Protein Transition Professorship at Van Hall Larenstein.
Next, Bob Ignacio, an Impact Developer from HAN University of Applied Sciences, shared insights on Reduce and Use Landfill Methane, a Biotech Booster funded project led by the HAN. This project develops a process for a sustainable way to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
Following the presentations, professors of applied sciences and senior researchers joined the Biotech Booster team for a networking lunch. During this session, Agon Kokaljari, an Impact Developer at Van Hall Larenstein, introduced the Biotech Booster program and elaborated on the innovative Impact Developer role, sparking lively discussion.
The afternoon included a tour of two key facilities at the university: the FACT (Food Application Center for Technology), a food-grade certified R&D and education center, and the WAC (Water Application Center). These hubs provide valuable opportunities for students, researchers, and especially start-ups, to advance their work.
The meeting concluded with a brainstorming session on the challenges and complexities of the Impact Developer role. This reflective dialogue allowed participants to share experiences and deepen their collective understanding of the role’s mission.
